How to keep the hood down in the breeze

If you wear your hat riding horseback, sailing, or in a breeze and you put the hood down you will probably find that it blows right back up and sticks there.

• One way to stop that is to carry little pieces of velcro with you to cover the velcro either on the brim or the hood so that it doesn't stick when it blows up there. As far as I know, this has never been tried.

• A really hokey way is to clip a clothes pin to the hood so that it covers the velcro and weighs the corner of the hood down. Yes, I've seen this, and who knows, it might catch on!

• Something I've tried in the past which is satisfactory, though not as convenient as the next tip, is to obtain strips of mating velcro long enough to reach from one velcro on the brim around the back of the crown to the other velcro on the brim, and sew them together back to back. When not in use this is stowed on the brim behind the crown of the hat. Take it off the brim of the hat and use it to attach the corners of the hood together under your chin when you want the hood to stay down.

  If you're more ambitious and picky about the looks, you can make a nice strap with piping to match the hat and just sew a pair of little mating patches of velcro to each end.
